DIY Coasters

 

I have been looking for a new DIY project and found this idea on Pinterest. These coasters are great for any room in your house, but they are also a great gift idea (I gave at set to my friend Stefanie for her birthday last month). 

Supplies:

Hobby Lobby:

Scrapbook paper cut into squares (3.75" x 3.75")

Clear Acrylic Gloss Coating 

Felt Glue

Felt cut into squares (3.75" x 3.75") 

Mod Podge

Sponge Brush

Square tiles from your local hardware store, I got these from Home Depot for only $.16!! (4.25"x4.25")

How to: 

1. Cut scrapbook paper and felt into squares.

2. Brush one coat of Mod Podge onto tile.

3. Place one piece of scrapbook paper on center of tile. Allow to dry.  

4. Brush another coat of Mod Podge over paper. Allow to dry (about 15min), repeat this step 2-3 times.

5. Once Mod Podge is dry, take the coasters outside (in the grass or place newspaper down) and spray each tile with clear acrylic gloss coating. The sealer makes the tiles water-resistant.

6. Allow coaster to dry completely. Once dry, glue the felt pieces to the back center of each coaster.

7. Wrap 4 coasters up in a bow and you have a perfect handcrafted gift!

Right Brain Expressions: Star Fish Door Hanger

Made this cute little hanging piece for our front door the other night. It's summer time so we figured we needed to bring a little beach decor into our Kansas home.

All it took was a few star fish ($2.99 at Hobby Lobby) and any type of twine, string or rope (also $2.99 at Hobby Lobby).  Wrap your twine around the tops of each star fish at different hanging lengths, keeping a loop at the top, and voila!

Right Brain Expressions: Fancying a Frame

I needed something fun for a blank area of my wall in my bedroom. I don't have much shelf space for picture frames, and my room was lacking pictures. I found this wooden frame at T.J. Maxx for $8, and thought it would be perfect to paint and hang pictures on that blank area.

 

I used acrylic paint, and was just going to leave it this sort of strawberry color, but then I thought it looked a little plain. I took a design from my bed spread and recreated it on the frame with one of the colors in the bed spread, also with acrylic paint.

It's amazing what a little paint can do to something so plain.

We loved this bold pattern so much that we painted canvas to display as art in the built-in shelves that frame our mantel.

What a great way to make easy and inexpensive art! You can find wallpaper in so many different colors and patterns for a very reasonable price. This is a perfect way to decorate a large bare wall without spending a lot of money on expensive artwork, and you are bound to find something that matches your current decor.

Bringing the Outdoors In

All this rain has definitely made our lawn look full and green! We thought we would bring some of the bright springy look/smell into the house. We don't have any plants in our house other than fresh flowers, but this grass is so easy to maintain and it took no time before we had to start trimming it!

We found this little planter at Good Ju Ju and thought it would be perfect for our adult chia pet project.

We also planted the grass in an extra hurricane that we had. I just love that you can see the roots.

This was so easy. We just got some soil and bought cat grass at the hardware store. We put it by the kitchen window and kept the soil damp. Megan had a great idea to put a couple ice cubes on top of the soil when we left for work, so it gradually watered the soil as the ice cubes melted. I felt like a little kid checking for sprouts every morning and night, the anticipation just killing me. The grass started sprouting after about 5 days, then it just went crazy! I  You can grow this in pretty much any container you would like.
