CCP Closes Kulo Exhibit Gallery

The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) finally decided to close down the gallery with controversial 'Kulo' exhibit and houses artist Mideo Cruz's controversial "Politeismo" artworks where several versions of Jesus Christ and other religious objects decorated with a red penis or other odd objects, which critics described as "blasphemous" and "sacrilegious."

"Due to numerous emails, text messages and other letters sent to various officers of the CCP, and to the artists themselves, with an increasing number of threats to persons and property, the members of the Board of the Cultural Center of the Philippines have decided to close down the Main Gallery where the Kulo Exhibit is on display," the CCP said in a statement.

However, members of an artists group condemned this decision and ask fellow artists and members of the press to fight against censorship and attacks on freedom of expression.

"To allow the exhibit’s closure based on the opinion of bishops and religious lay leaders]would set the precedent for all other exhibitions that would follow," according to a Facebook message by the Palayain ang Sining artist group.
