World Record Broken on Global Smurfs Day!

CULVER CITY, Calif.,/BRUSSELS, Belgium, June 25, 2011 – Today, in honor of Global Smurfs Day, Smurfs fans in 11 cities around the world set a new Guinness World Records title for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period in Multiple Venues, it was announced today by Marc Weinstock, president, Worldwide Marketing for Sony Pictures Entertainment. The worldwide events were organized by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sony Pictures Animation in anticipation of the release of The Smurfs® (opening in the Philippines on August 10.)

As worldwide audiences turned out to celebrate the birthday of Peyo, the creator of the Smurfs, fans came to events dressed as Smurfs (white Smurf hat, white pants and shoes, and body painted blue). Adjudicators from Guinness World Records confirmed that a total of 4,891 people dressed as Smurfs in 11 locations simultaneously around the world, claiming a new title for Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Smurfs within a 24-hour Period in Multiple Venues. The previous record had been 2,510 people dressed as Smurfs.

The global record was set by people dressed as Smurfs in Brussels, Belgium; Athens, Greece; Scheveningen (The Hague), Holland; Dublin, Ireland; Mexico City, Mexico; Panama City, Panama; Warsaw, Poland; Moscow, Russia; Johannesburg, South Africa; New York, USA; and London, UK.

Commenting on the announcement, Weinstock said, “It’s a thrill to see so many people turn out to be a part of this true fan moment in Smurfs history. Breaking a Guinness World Record on Global Smurfs Day is a testament to the enormous appeal and popularity of these beloved characters.”

Aleksandr Vypirailenko, Guinness World Records Adjudicator, added, “We are impressed by the level of coordination and timing required to pull off this truly global record attempt. With 11 cities, each with hundreds of people dressed as Smurfs – and it all happened simultaneously. We apply the same strict rules and exacting approach to every record that we recognize, and it’s exciting to see that this record was not simply broken, but smashed.”

In addition, people around the world observed Global Smurfs Day, from lit monuments in Brazil to a fun-filled family event at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen. In France, Smurf figurines inhabited Paris’s garden of the Champs de Mars (in front of the Eiffel Tower).

In the Philippines, Global Smurfs Day was celebrated with festivities for the family at the SM Mall of Asia in an afternoon of fun games, wacky snaps at the BaiCapture photo booth, tattoo painting and free blue cotton candy.

The Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen in Columbia Pictures/Sony Pictures Animation’s hybrid live-action and animated family comedy, The Smurfs. When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the Smurfs out of their village, through a magical portal, and into our world, they land in the middle of New York’s Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down. Directed by Raja Gosnell. The producer is Jordan Kerner. The screenplay is by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss and Jay Scherick & David Ronn from a story by J. David Stem & David N. Weiss, based on the Characters and Works of Peyo.

Video - Who Is Leo Howard the Karate Master? - Biography, Photos, Video and News!

Kickin' It Star Leo Howard
Leo Howard – a name most are not familiar with.

But beware, because over the next few years you’re going to hear a lot about this 14-year-old extraordinary young man.

Let’s start with the basics:

Leo Howard was born on July 13, 1997 in Newport Beach California and lives near San Diego today.

From a young age Leo was fascinated by the martial arts, karate and kobudo and has studied the arts since he was just a child.

Today, Leo is a black belt master in the field of karate, Shorei Ru, and Wu Shu, and has stunned audiences since he was just 8-years-old with his karate, martial arts, and stunt skills.

Leo’s acting career started when he was just 8-years-old with a small role as the front desk clerk in the television documentary “Camp Hollywood”.

From there, Leo got his big break on the TV series “Monk” playing the role of a young karate expert. From that one appearance, Leo Howard’s acting career took off.

Black Belt Karate Master
His mix of acting ability combined with his karate expertise is amazing, and producers and talent scouts took notice and started beating down his door.

2009 was a breakout year for Leo as he appeared in six different movie and TV projects that propelled him into a fast track Hollywood vocation.

First was the movie “Aussie and Ted's Great Adventure” about a lovable Australian dog who embarks on a mission to return his young owner's missing Teddy Bear.

Next was the movie “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” working alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller and Dennis Quaid – a story about an elite military unit comprised of special operatives known as G.I. Joe that takes on an evil organization led by a disreputable arms dealer. Leo performed all of his own stunts and impressed the director and audiences alike.

With two movies under his black belt, Leo completed his third movie titled “Shorts” working with Jon Cryer, William H. Macy, and James Spader.

“Shorts” told the story of a young boy's discovery of a colorful, wish-granting rock that causes pandemonium in the town of Black Falls and the jealous kids and cunning adults that try to steal it from him.

“Shorts” was the big break for Leo and showed he could hold his own in a large movie project. But his celebrity status was just starting to be noticed.

Disney got wind of Leo and cast him in his own show in 2009 called “Leo Little’s Big Show” where he appeared in thirteen episodes about him and his sister Amy who host a show about Disney stars, shows, and movies from their family room.

After appearing in two episodes of “Zeke and Luther” about two best friends who want to become the world's greatest skateboarders, Leo was hired for his first starring role in the movie “Logan”, about two brothers who have their minds set on an impossible task.

“Logon” showed Hollywood that Leo had the staying power to not only carry a feature length movie but also work the long hours necessary for a television series while performing action sequences and his own stunts at the same time. Leo Howard was becoming a star.

But his big big Hollywood break came in 2011 when the Disney XD network cast Leo in the role of Jake in the network’s karate action TV series “Kickin’ It” working with Hanna Montana veteran actor Jason Earles.

The series is set at the Bobby Wasabi Martial Arts Academy - a strip mall martial arts studio and the worst dojo in the nationwide Bobby Wasabi chain.

The plot revolves around a motley crew of endearing misfit teens who welcome a hotshot skateboarder named Jack who teaches them about life, karate, and how to just plain kick it.

Kickin’ It” was one of Disney’s highest rated new shows and forever cemented Leo’s star on Hollywood.

Leo also scored a major role as the young Conan in director Marcus Nispel’s “Conan the Barbarian” where again he performed all his stunts and karate moves while in heavy movie makeup and shirtless barbarian period costumes.

“Conan” tells of the quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the warrior but soon turns into an epic battle against colossal rivals, horrifying monsters, and impossible odds.

It’s clear that at only 14-years-old Leo Howard is going to be around for a long time. His combination of acting, humor, martial arts, karate, and teen idol appeal along with the marketing might of Disney tells us his star has just began to rise over Hollywood.

Jamie Chung, from 'Sucker Punch' to 'Hangover Part II'

Jamie Chung is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought after young actresses. Fresh getting rave notices as the fiercely loyal Amber in Zack Snyder's epic action-adventure “Sucker Punch,” she now stars in Warner Bros.' new outrageous comedy “The Hangover Part II,” opposite Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha.

In the film, Phil (Cooper), Stu (Helms), Alan (Galifianakis) and Doug (Bartha) travel to exotic Thailand for Stu’s wedding to Lauren (Chung). After the unforgettable bachelor party in Las Vegas, Stu is taking no chances and has opted for a safe, subdued pre-wedding brunch. However, things don’t always go as planned. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what happens in Bangkok can’t even be imagined.

Lauren is marrying Stu despite her father’s objections. Ed Helms elaborates, “Her father, Fohn, despises Stu because he sees Stu as a milquetoast-y, spineless nerd…which is half-true but not altogether fair.”

Jamie Chung counters, “Lauren thinks Stu is so adorable, she couldn’t help but fall in love with him. It doesn’t matter that her father doesn’t approve. She is a woman with a mind of her own. She has always done what she wanted to do…and she wants to marry Stu.”

How does Chung feel to be the only female star in a male-dominated cast? “I had just done `Sucker Punch' with a bunch of girls so I was scared to find myself surrounded by guys,” she explains. “But they were all really nice and welcoming. The only problem is they’re always ‘on’, especially Zach. It keeps you on your toes.”

The movie was shot in Thailand, and Jamie enjoyed getting the chance to appreciate the country’s stunning scenery, and she had fun filming a host of wacky scenes. “Most of my scenes take place at this beautiful resort, but by the end of the movie my character gets drawn into the Bangkok craziness,” she smiles.

Previously, Jamie Chung played Rob Schneider’s daughter in the hit summer comedy “Grown Ups,” alongside Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Kevin James and David Spade. She recently wrapped production on “The Man with the Iron Fists,” starring Russell Crowe.
On the small screen, Chung starred as the lead in the hit ABC Family original event “Samurai Girl.” The six-episode series revolved around her character, Heaven, the adopted daughter of wealthy parents who strives to balance a normal life with the Samurai traditions of her ancestors.

Chung’s other film and television credits include the horror feature “Sorority Row,” the adventure film “Dragonball: Evolution,” and roles on “ER,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Castle” and “CSI: NY,” as well as recurring appearances on “Greek.”

Opening across the Philippines on June 8, “The Hangover Part II” is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Top Five Stoner Movies to Celebrate April 20 Cannabis Day – And What Is All This Stuff About 420?

By now you have probably seen all the references to 420 and may be wondering what the deal is.

The term was created by a group of teenage pot smokers in San Rafael, California in 1971. They called themselves the “Waldos”, because their favorite place to hang-out was a wall outside the school.

The group first used the term in connection with a plan to search for an abandoned marijuana crop they had heard about. The Waldos designated the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of San Rafael High School as their meeting place, and 4:20 p.m. as their meeting time.

The Waldos referred to this plan with the phrase "4:20 Louis”

While the teens never found their pot of gold, the phrase eventually evolved into just “420”, a code word used to mean pot-smoking or being part of the pot culture in general.

So to celebrate this cannabis day on April 20, 2011, we have compiled a list of the five best stoner movies ever made.

Greg and Friends Level Up in 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.'

Greg Heffley, the kid who made “wimpy” cool, is back in an all-new family comedy film based on the best-selling follow-up novel by Jeff Kinney of the same title “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.”

The first motion picture based on Kinney’s work, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” brought to cinematic life the adventures of wisecracking pre-teen Greg Heffley, who must somehow survive the scariest time of anyone’s life….middle school. Zachary Gordon, Devon Bostick, Rachael Harris, Robert Capron, Steve Zahn and most of the cast from “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” return. Now, with the new film, the focus is on Greg’s family, especially his relationship with his older brother, Rodrick. Greg has changed since the first movie. Last year, he was heading into middle school for the first time. This year, he feels more confident and like he’s in control. And now, he’s trying to make inroads with a pretty new girl at school, so he can improve his situation at school even further.

“The movie is centered on a classic theme, something most people have been through, which is sibling rivalry,” says producer Brad Simpson. “Every day, Greg probably wishes he were an only child.”

“It’s hard from me to look at the Wimpy Kid books now and not think of Zach [Gordon],” says Simpson. “I think he’s the perfect Greg Heffley. He’s brought a depth that was essential to role. Zach has a little bit of Greg in him – that’s the key thing. He’s a fast talker and often looking for an angle. Zach doesn’t have some of Greg’s hard edges and he has the ability to deliver some of the ‘Greg lines’ that can read as being harsh, but when delivered by Zach, you see that they come from him wanting to fit in. Greg isn’t mean; he’s just struggling, like every kid, to find his place in the world.”

“Greg Heffley has definitely changed since we saw him in the first movie,” says Zachary. “In the books, he pretty much stays the same but, for the movies, we wanted him change at least a little bit. This time, he and Rowley don’t have as much conflict. Greg is no longer being humiliated every day and he’s kind of got the school-thing down.”

Robert Capron returns as Greg Heffley’s best friend, Rowley Jefferson, “Rowley is still wide-eyed,” says Simpson. “He thinks you should just be yourself and people will like you.”

“Rowley and Greg’s relationship hasn’t really changed,” Capron elaborates. “They’re still really good friends and Greg is still making Rowley do things that he doesn’t want to, but Rowley’s doing them anyway.”

Jeff Kinney notes that, “In the first movie, Greg is worried about Rowley weighing him down in the social world. But now, he is comfortable with Rowley as his best friend. There’s something about the relationship that’s really one-sided, but there’s something that also works. And in this movie, we’re exploring the part that works.”

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules” opens April 23 (Saturday) in theaters from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros.

China Tells Television and Film Producers – ‘Don’t Go Back In Time Please’

In case you were every wondering why the United States is the greatest nation on earth – here is one reason.

While the U.S. has laws that regulate certain “words” or “situations” of broadcast television, we don’t generally try to censor the plot.

China, on the other hand, has in no uncertain terms just laid down the law for film and TV producers in their country. And when the “State” owns all the networks and newspapers, well – whatever they say goes.

New guidelines issued last month discourage plot lines that contain elements of fantasy, time-travel, random compilations of mythical stories, bizarre plots, absurd techniques, even propagating feudal superstitions, fatalism and reincarnation, ambiguous moral lessons, and a lack of positive thinking.

The government thinks the media shouldn’t have characters that travel back in time and rewrite history. They say this goes against Chinese heritage, they also say that myth, superstitions and reincarnation are all questionable.

Yea, like this is the biggest problem they have in China.

Oh well, guess I won’t be able to watch “Star Trek” reruns during my next visit. That's okay - I couldn't understand then anyway.

‘The Hobbit’ Finally Starts Filming In New Zealand – New Set Photos

It is finally happening!

After almost two years of delays and problems, Peter Jackson has finally started filming on the new multi-part 3D epic companion to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy titled “The Hobbit”.

The decision to film “The Hobbit” in 3D was a difficult one, and slowed pre-production and set development.

The $500 million epic project has been plagued with problems that at times seemed close to destroying the idea of seeing middle earth on the big screen again.

Several script problems needed to be worked through and a labor union dispute slowed production to a crawl. MGM Studios faced serious financial problems and the team lost famed writer and producer Guillermo del Toro after he had already put two years of work into the project before it even got off the ground.

Current director Peter Jackson spent time in the hospital for stress related problems, and the earthquake in Christ Church caused further delays in New Zealand.

But after overcoming all these obstacles, filming has now started and the project is on track.

“The Hobbit Part 1” stars Cate Blanchett, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood as Frodo, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and a possible appearance by Leonard Nimoy as Smaug.

Part one tells the continuing story of Bilbo Baggins, a Hobbit, who journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug.

Along the way there are adventures with trolls and elves, a battle with goblins, the naming of Bilbo's sword as “Sting” after a battle with some spiders, escaping from Wargs, and a barrel ride in a river.

Of course there is a great battle, “The Battle of Five Armies”, which includes men, dwarves, elves, goblins with Wargs, and more.

The journey leads Bilbo Baggins into the “Riddles in the Dark” where he meets Gollum and receives a powerful ring that will have a great impact on the future of their world.

General release is slated for Christmas 2012 - assuming no more delays, and if the real world has not been destroyed by Orcs, or the impending 2012 end of the world prophecies.

J.R.R. Tolkien would have been proud.

'Inception' in 60 Seconds

Children's Book 'Mars Needs Moms' Now a Big Screen Adventure

The bestselling children’s book Mars Needs Moms by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed blasts off to the big screen as an eye-popping 3D animated adventure from the team behind “Disney’s A Christmas Carol” and “The Polar Express.” The Walt Disney film showcases nine-year-old Milo’s (Seth Green) quest to save his mom (Joan Cusack) from Martians. What follows is a wild adventure that involves stowing away on a spaceship, navigating an elaborate, multi-level planet and taking on the alien nation and their leader.

Breathed was moved to write the book Mars Needs Moms after an eventful dinner at home. “One night my son Milo threw his broccoli into the air and stormed from the table—a scene depicted with more civility in the movie,” says Breathed. “Upon leaving, he said something about his mother too vile to repeat here—which would only result in expensive therapy later if he ever remembered. From out of nowhere came my next line: ‘You might think differently about your mom if she were kidnapped by Martians.’ I spun on my heels and wrote the book that night. The rest is Disney history.”

ImageMovers Digital and the Disney team embraced the project, tapping Simon Wells to direct and co-write the script with wife Wendy Wells. The writing partners have been married for 23 years, and daughters Meredith and Teagan are featured as Martian Hatchlings in the movie. The film follows in the footsteps of ImageMovers Digital’s roster of well-received family fare, “The Polar Express” and “Monster House,” bringing the story to the big screen in 3D via performance capture. The technique digitally captures the performances of the actors with computerized cameras in a full 360 degrees, allowing filmmakers to transport audiences to Mars—and back—creating elaborate out-of-this-world settings and characters while capitalizing on the expert performances of the cast.

The director says the action and adventure and humor will explode on the big screen—thanks in no small part to the fact that it’ll be presented in 3D and shown on IMAX screens. But Wells says it’s the heart of the film that first attracted them. “This film has an amazing center to it which is the mother's love for the child and the child's realization about that love,” says Wells. “And that really spoke to me. It spoke to my wife and writing partner, Wendy. And we built the whole thing around that central moment, which was the whole reason why Berkeley wrote the original book in the first place.”

Producer Jack Rapke says the idea of aliens coming to Earth in search of our mothering expertise is a rich one. “The women who are running Mars are very totalitarian and very OCD—not maternal at all,” says Rapke. “They know that in the solar system, there is a planet called Earth, with a species of humans whose moms seem to be able to control offspring. So they need one every 25 years or so and they send their Martian raiders down to Earth to get one—who, this time, just happens to be Milo’s mom.”

Filmmakers decided to expand the reach of the book when it hit the big screen. “We wanted to age the characters up slightly,” says Wells. “And we realized we were going to spend much longer on Mars. So you travel around an alien world, meet new beings and see the different aspects of that world.”

Wells, who’s the great grandson of sci-fi author H.G. Wells, says the film capitalizes on the audience’s natural curiosity about outer space and thirst for action. “You’re shot at and chased and you discover things. You get to experience environments that you would never in your normal lives get to see. You get to travel on a huge heroic journey in pursuit of the noblest cause of all, which is to save your mum because you love her.”

Opening soon across the Philippines in IMAX 3D, Digital 3D and regular format, “Mars Needs Moms” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International.

The Farrelly Brothers Push the Comedic Envelope in 'Hall Pass'

Hall Pass -- one week off from marriage to do whatever you want, no questions asked. That’s what best buddies Rick (Owen Wilson) and Fred (Jason Sudeikis) get from their wives in New Line Cinema’s outrageous comedy “Hall Pass” written and directed by the Farrelly Brothers (“There’s Something About Mary,” “Shallow Hal”).

In the film, Rick and his buddy Fred consider themselves average, maybe even above-average, husbands. Easygoing, dependable and gainfully employed, they’re the kind of guys who aren’t averse to pitching in with the household chores now and then, or stopping by the dry cleaner’s… the kind of guys who wouldn't dream of cheating on their wives.

Well, actually they would. Not cheat on them, necessarily, but dream about it. Every single day. With every woman they see.

“Rick is happily married, with kids and a wife he loves. He has a good job, a nice existence but, like a lot of men, he can’t help noticing women and this irritates his wife,” says co-director Peter Farrelly. The Farrellys also share screenwriting credit with Pete Jones and Kevin Barnett. Together, they felt that this eminently relatable scenario was ripe for some frank and irreverent exploration.

“The first thing that struck me about the story was how much comic potential it had. It’s a universal theme. If God came to me and said, ‘Pete, you’re with the hottest woman on the planet, she’s the best and there’s no one better,’ I’d probably still want to take a look at the second-best,” Peter admits. “Even if you’re happily married and committed, it doesn’t mean you stop looking. The question is how far do you take it?”

Owen Wilson, who stars as the easily distracted suburban dad, Rick, agrees. “Most guys can’t help noticing a good-looking woman walk by, but some of them do a better job at being subtle about it. With others, like Rick, it’s like they have their heads on a swivel.”

One of the ideas behind “Hall Pass” is that men—and women, too—are just hard-wired to look. And occasionally, they may also wonder. What if I wasn’t married? What could I be doing now? And with whom? Being a Farrelly brothers comedy, such probing philosophic questions are bound to lead down some dangerously slippery slopes.

Says Bobby Farrelly, “A lot of people joke about the seven-year itch and this is sort of an updated version of that. When you’re dealing with the sacred institution of marriage, you’re playing with fire, so we knew we had to handle it just right. But we weren’t afraid of tackling the subject and we certainly weren’t going to hold back on any of the jokes or the temptations…or anything else. If we think it’s funny, Pete and I will go for it. We love pushing the envelope.”

“‘Hall Pass’ is absolutely a comedy,” adds screenwriter Pete Jones. “But you never lose sight of the fact that there are consequences to what these characters do.”

Opening soon across the Philippines, “Hall Pass” is a New Line Cinema presentation to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
